OpenAI, Anthropic and Google are reportedly working to create an AI standards body. Cohere co-founder and CEO Aidan Gomez pushed back in a blog post, accusing the dominant American labs of forming a 'cartel' under the guise of safety. 'AI needs guardrails. That is not the dispute and never has been,' he wrote, arguing the real fight is over who writes the rules, who gets to participate, and whose interests those rules protect — highlighting tensions between frontier-lab-led standard-setting and the broader ecosystem.
