Agility's Digit 5 humanoid squats to avoid harming human coworkers in shared workspaces

Ars Technica AI · rss · 2026-09-16

Agility Robotics has debuted Digit 5, its first humanoid robot engineered to work safely around humans without physical barriers.

When it detects a person at a distance, Digit 5 autonomously steers away or stands still to let them pass; at close proximity it can even squat into a seated position. CTO Pras Velagapudi described a complex safe motion system that picks different mitigations based on the type of human presence detected.

These safety features could unlock warehouse and automotive factory deployments without isolated robot work cells.
