Open weights are not open source: AI's favorite label comes under dispute

The distinction matters more than a technicality: it determines whether you can merely deploy a finished neural network or meaningfully inspect, reproduce, alter and redistribute the system that produced it. A genuinely open source system would grant all of those freedoms — and most 'open' models don't, fueling a labeling dispute.
