Tarbell Funding Controversy: Reporters Only Briefly Funded, Bias Toward AI Doom Denied

Responding to claims that Time's AI coverage was skewed toward doomsday narratives due to funding from the Tarbell Center, binarybits clarified: one reporter was funded for only one year in 2024–25, another received funding for just a single story in 2025, with the relationship disclosed at the time, and neither is currently supported by Tarbell. He added that he has mentored Tarbell fellows and served as a reviewer for its funding program, that Tarbell has funded plenty of non-doomsday reporting, and that he never felt steered toward a doomsday stance.
