Dev ports Blender 5.1 MCP add-on to Blender 3.6, builds full owl scene from one prompt
SpinachOk9137 · reddit · 2026-09-16
A Reddit user, unable to run newer Blender on their machine, adapted the Blender 5.1-only MCP add-on to work on Blender 3.6.23 with Python 3.10.13, tested with Codex/Astra.
Verified capabilities include:
- MCP client-to-Blender communication and remote Python execution
- Creating/deleting objects, mesh editing, materials, and scene text
- Object and camera placement, plus generating a complete stylized owl (body, wings, materials, camera) from a single natural-language prompt
The author notes the port doesn't give 3.6 access to post-3.6 Blender APIs, so some AI-generated commands may still fail. The open add-on runs locally, auto-starts the MCP server, and connects to the ChatGPT desktop app via Streamable HTTP. The author is seeking compatibility testers on other systems.
