AI risk debate: is danger only in connecting software to control, or the 'god' itself?

A debate on AI risk. tomswiss argues software is only dangerous when given control of real-world things: corporations that negligently connect bad software should be broken up, responsible people jailed — just stop connecting AI to things. JMannhart pushes back strongly: if systems smarter than humans are plausible (as AI experts largely agree) and stay unregulated and widely accessible, what you must worry about is much closer to a 'god', and society has to plan for people doing this constantly.
