MIT's Buehler builds recursive meta-intelligence where AI worlds solve materials failure

MIT professor Markus Buehler describes his team's "recursive meta-intelligence": an AI that creates its own scientific instruments, turns them into persistent worlds inhabited by an ecology of hundreds of AIs, and uses those worlds to discover mechanistic principles behind one of the hardest classes of physical problems — how complex hierarchical materials evolve and fail.
The system reasons across enormous spaces of physical trajectories where every rupture changes what can happen next, then compresses those histories into human-comprehensible design principles: intricate, highly nonlinear causal chains.
