When does driving tech flip from complement to substitute? Fradkin's pushback on pro-worker AI

MIT economist Andrey Fradkin pushes back on Daron Acemoglu-style 'pro-worker AI' arguments, noting the complement/substitute line is nearly impossible to draw ex ante. Self-driving is pro-worker right up to an 'autonomy threshold,' after which it becomes a substitute and radically changes driving-time supply at a given price.
He adds three counterpoints: capital chases AGI because markets demand it, and a viable pro-worker AI startup would trivially attract funding; labs and the broader economy have a division of labor, with labs also training models for high-application tasks; and predicting which technologies substitute for labor in advance is largely impossible.
