- WhatsApp/iMessage → Signal: end-to-end encrypted, open source, nothing stored on servers, no ads; both incumbents are US companies subject to US law.
- Microsoft Office → LibreOffice: free, open source, fully offline; the author claims everything typed into Word/Excel/PowerPoint passes through Microsoft's servers, and notes existing files open directly after installing from libreoffice.org.
