AI researcher: labs aren't suddenly worried about x-risk — they've been sincere for years

Reacting to a wave of convoluted conspiracy theories about why AI companies are "suddenly" concerned about existential risk, the author argues the situation is simple:
- The labs are sincere: frontier labs genuinely believe AI is extremely dangerous; their concern isn't PR theater.
- Long-standing views: many researchers have been thinking and writing about this for years — nothing about their stance is new or sudden.
- Why they joined the field: many researchers entered precisely because they saw the existential risk of artificial minds recursively bootstrapping to superhuman capabilities, and decided that actively building aligned AI systems was the most reasonable way to reduce that risk — counterintuitive at first glance, but sensible given the alternatives.
