AI risk take: robots and viruses are manageable — culture shock is the real threat
mayfer · x · 2026-09-15
A thoughtful X thread ranking AI catastrophic risks. The author isn't worried about self-replicating robots (manufacturing is tied to real-world legal/funding systems and would be caught early), nano-replicators (that tech tree can't be thought into existence), or digital hacking (recoverable; physical hacks are localized). Engineered viruses get mild concern. The biggest worry: extreme cultural change — much of the economy is a consensus game rather than real need, and AI introduces an 'economic doppelganger' that will make allocating true scarcities brutally hard.
