Columbia Economist Dave Holtz Joins OpenAI to Lead AGI Economics Research

Dave Holtz announced he will take a leave from Columbia University for the 2026–2027 academic year to work full-time with OpenAI's economic research team, leading AGI economics research. He cited how quickly the AI capability frontier is expanding and wants to explore how economics can help understand and shape increasingly capable AI, plus how the economy will evolve alongside it. He joins Chief Economist Ronnie Chatterji's team, with fellow researchers congratulating him and calling for more ambitious economists studying AGI.
