Monetization of SLMs: dev says fine-tuned small models now beat SaaS, after 20+ fine-tunes
churchkey · x · 2026-09-15
A developer argues software monetization is dead—apps can be cloned in hours—and sees a new opportunity in monetizing small language models: fine-tune 0.5B–12B models for specific use cases and sell licenses like SaaS.
He has fine-tuned 20+ models in the past year and says frontier models can now handle the whole pipeline end-to-end: dataset prep, LoRA adapters, and exporting to GGUF or MLX. A tuned SLM can beat SoTA models on narrow tasks, cut API costs by 95%, run 5x faster, and be privately hosted.
