AI Researcher Urges People to Join Alignment Work, Citing Lab Compute Access and Independent Labs

AI researcher tszzl argues that labs now offer frontier researchers compute and access to the latest models — both for accelerating alignment research and for studying somewhat misaligned systems — and, despite the awkwardness of saying so, urges people to come work on alignment.

He adds that you don't need to join a major lab: citing Richard Ngo's view that labs are "pressure cooker" environments where moving fast dominates deep thinking, he highlights Goodfire AI, Redwood Research, and METR as independent shops doing vital alignment work.
