Blogger's 'audit' claims METR isn't independent: $7.7B Anthropic stock funds the AI doom ecosystem
kevinnbass · x · 2026-09-15
kevinnbass published a long thread claiming an audit of Anthropic's finances and calling for a Congressional investigation, alleging a self-perpetuating "regulatory capture machine" he calls the "Anthropic Network."
The claimed chain:
- Dario Amodei proposed METR as a third-party evaluator of Anthropic's model risks, but METR depends on Good Ventures Foundation
- GVF's core asset is Dustin Moskovitz's Anthropic stock: from $500M in early last year to over $7.7B in 16 months
- METR and the whole ecosystem are thus financially tied to Anthropic's success — its failure would collapse the funding chain; its growth funds louder AI-doom messaging
- The same funders back Tarbell Center, which publishes AI-doom articles in The Verge, TIME, LA Times — "selling the problem and the solution from the same money pile"
Conclusion: the "third-party evaluator" is effectively on Anthropic's payroll.
Caveat: this is one blogger's unverified analysis; Anthropic and METR have not responded. Still notable as a conflict-of-interest argument around AI safety governance.
