California bans addictive feeds for under-16s and AI companion toys in new law

California Governor Gavin Newsom signed a law barring social platforms from exposing users under 16 to behaviorally addictive features and banning toys with AI companion chatbots. Gerard Sans notes it came a year and a half after his first warning, and discusses risks to children and other vulnerable groups as conversational AI blurs the line between tool and companion.
