Dario Amodei's essay "We Must Pace the Frontier": three proposals, first already unilaterally adopted
TheZvi · x · 2026-09-14
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei published a new essay, "We Must Pace the Frontier," naming his call after the July letter lab employees signed. He argues we need to slow the rate at which AIs increase their capabilities to allow necessary alignment and safety work, warning that without pacing he expects rapid escalation. He offered three proposals and unilaterally committed to the first—Embedded Evaluators. OpenAI followed, and both Elon Musk and Demis Hassabis endorsed the overall proposal.
Zvi's review cautions that the odds remain against us, the situation is still grim, and there is no agreement yet on what "pacing" means in practice—but this is Actual Progress, and the work can begin.
