Google pilots paying publishers for content used in AI Overviews, AI Mode and Gemini

Google is quietly running a small "AI contribution pilot" through Search Console, paying publishers when their content meaningfully contributes to AI-generated answers in AI Overviews, AI Mode and Gemini, per a help document and screenshots obtained by Digiday. The pay-per-value licensing scheme was first spotted in April 2026. Critics argue it looks less like a meaningful payout and more like a legal fig leaf.
