Bio practitioner: LLM virus design isn't the bottleneck — physical synthesis is

The author rebuts fears that LLMs enable dangerous viruses: while models can propose infectious genomes, these are typically copies or tweaks of known ones. The real bottleneck is physical synthesis, equipment, and supplies. Drawing on his experience building a fully automated, API-driven lab, he argues a hypothetical >$100M autonomous virus-synthesis lab couldn't exist today, DNA synthesis vendors screen sequences, and designing pandemic-evading viruses requires physical-world iteration no 'genius in a datacenter' can bypass.
