Core AI/ML alone rarely gets you hired: the four app-layer skills AI engineers need
ashishllm · x · 2026-09-14
Blogger ashishllm amplifies Ankit Sisodya's argument that core AI/ML skills alone rarely land jobs — most opportunities are at the AI application layer, not the model layer.
Four skill areas recommended for AI engineers:
- Infrastructure: LLM latency/cost optimization — quantization, Flash Attention, Paged Attention, continuous batching, prompt caching
- Finetuning: open-source models with QLoRA and RLHF
- MLOps: model versioning, rollback, deployment, shadow deployment, GPU utilization, load balancing, logging
- Cloud: just the 8-10 AWS services AI engineers actually use, learned by building one solid project
