Amid discourse about evals org METR's independence and potential corruption, interpretability researcher Neel Nanda responded that METR publicly lists its funding sources and does not take money from sources that could compromise independence, such as AI labs. He noted this stance has historically made fundraising harder and cost them time away from their work. While other independence critiques may be reasonable, finances seem fine to him.
