Microsoft Research's Project Vega lets AI agents play games for you while you watch
jonerp · x · 2026-09-14
Microsoft Research unveiled Project Vega (branded "Vibe Gaming"): instead of controlling your character, you converse with an AI agent that lives, acts and socializes in the game world autonomously while you watch and nudge it via natural language. Pivot to AI's David Gerard mocks it as "gaming, but we remove the bit where you play the game" — turning players into middle managers for robots.
- The underlying paper is "Beyond Pixel Histories: World Models with Persistent 3D State" (March 2026, arXiv).
- The testbed is the open-source voxel game Luanti, chosen for its open design and expressive Lua APIs — ironic given Microsoft owns Minecraft.
- The piece argues the system doesn't really work and that someone confused real games people enjoy with publishing a quick ML paper.
