Carmack revisits the Doom deathmatch origin dispute and trusts Romero's memory over his own

Responding to Sandy Petersen's accusation of gaslighting, John Carmack writes a long note on the 30-year-old dispute over Doom deathmatch's origins. Carmack says he lacks confidence in his own old memories and generally trusts Romero's. He clearly recalls the first time two computers ran Doom talking to each other — 'sublime' — and argues every shared virtual world of young men inevitably hosts deathmatch. He suspects the confusion lies in the fraction of people who originally bought Doom for multiplayer.
