- The fruit fly connectome mapping has succeeded: 160,000 neurons and 10^7 synapses from 100TB of raw data. The digital fly brain can already complete a whole series of tasks, including complex navigation in open worlds.
- Teams are now mapping the zebrafish connectome: similar neuron count but 10x more synapses, 200TB of raw data. As a vertebrate connectome, it shares basic structure with other vertebrates, making it more significant.
- For context, rodents have 70M neurons and 10^11 synapses and will come later. The author argues this method yields outsized results from miniscule models, suggesting AI is just beginning.
