arXiv sparks backlash over panels testing whether authors understand their own work
RexDouglass · x · 2026-09-14
A debate over arXiv and academic gatekeeping: the quoted post argues it's extraordinary to claim a committee can infer whether an author understands their own work and should have authority to test them. If a paper is meaningful, valid, reproducible, and understandable, evaluate the paper itself; AI's opportunity is letting more people contribute across disciplines beyond formal credentials. More papers aren't a problem — abundance expands the space of possibilities.
Replicator RexDouglass quipped he didn't have "arXiv becoming a journal, then that journal becoming a fascist precog" on his bingo card, mocking the notion that authors shouldn't use tools they don't understand.
