- A 75-page paper, "The Last AI Built by Humans: Toward Genuine Recursive Self-Improvement," from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Tsinghua, ByteDance, Shanghai AI Lab and others charts a roadmap toward genuine recursive self-improvement (RSI).
- The goal: AI systems that don't just perform tasks better but continuously improve the mechanisms that make themselves better.
- It defines five stages of rising autonomy: L1 executing human-designed improvements → L2 choosing its own strategies → L3 deciding what experiences/data it needs → L4 continuous adaptation from real-world feedback → L5 meta-improvement, modifying and inheriting the very process that creates better successor systems.
