New Amazon Science research addresses a counterintuitive finding: years of iterating against the same benchmarks should, by textbook logic, cause overfitting in ML research agents — yet it largely doesn't. The explanation: generalizing strategies can be expressed in too compact a form to allow memorization, while strategies that would overfit don't survive a compression bottleneck.
