NASA and IBM's moon-mapping AI spots new crater left by SpaceX rocket impact

NASA and IBM released a moon-mapping AI model on September 10 that identified a fresh crater left by a SpaceX rocket body impact in a before-and-after demo. Trained on roughly 2 million lunar image tiles, the model detected the new crater even though the post-impact image wasn't in its pretraining set.

Beyond impact craters, it helps researchers map volcanic features and estimate where ice could remain stable near the lunar poles. Model weights, fine-tuning code, and datasets are all public.
