Researchers: open-source frontier models are needed for rigorous AI safety research

Yangfeng Ji argues calls to "slow down AI" are a decade old, and critics worried about safety should instead fund fundamental AI research — without a theoretical foundation we don't even know what or how to regulate. Hanjie Chen adds that open-sourcing frontier model counterparts is at minimum needed to enable rigorous fundamental AI research.
