Apple engineer explains why SwiftUI's API surface is so conservative: a multi-year UINavigationBar rewrite
bugKrusha · x · 2026-09-14
Kyle Macomber, an engineer on Apple's UI frameworks team, pushed back on criticism of SwiftUI's conservative API surface: the navigation bar transformation from iOS 17 to iOS 27 on iPhone Duo took a massive multi-year effort that required rewriting nearly all of UINavigationBar and UINavigationController. He wishes SwiftUI were open source but says the team has good reasons for how it operates. The post doubles as a hiring plug for the team.
