Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince: One Agent per Knowledge Worker Would Need 40x the World's CPUs
Sethwinterroth · x · 2026-09-14
Cloudflare founder Matthew Prince ran the numbers on the agent era: if every knowledge worker on Earth had just one persistent agent — conservative, he argues, since most will run more — and those agents ran in containers, the cost of importing a full OS and toolchain per container becomes staggering.
His conclusion: ignoring GPUs entirely, CPUs alone would need to scale to 40x the world's current total. He notes the entire hyperscale and mobile world is built on containers, calling this the start of the biggest compute buildout in history. Oxide Computer, quoted in the retweet, says it was built for exactly this moment.
