Japan to Hold Autonomous Boat Contest in Imabari Castle Moat in March 2027

SUNABACO, commissioned by Imabari City, will host an exhibition of the Imabari Maritime Robot Challenge in the castle moat in March 2027. Teams get standardized ASV hulls with LiDAR and depth cameras and compete on ROS-based fully autonomous navigation: buoy recognition, gate transit, and RTK-GNSS centimeter-level auto-docking, with no manual control allowed. The project aims to build maritime robotics talent for Japan's Shipyard 4.0 push toward doubling shipbuilding to 18M gross tons by 2035.
