arXiv hits record 447 ML papers in one day as Zachery Lipton says academia may need to burn down
NeighborhoodFatCat · reddit · 2026-09-13
A Reddit post cites researcher Zachery Lipton's claim that "CS academia broke the system... perhaps all that it takes for the system to rebuild is for it to burn to the ground." The data point: on Sept 9, 2026, arXiv's cs.LG category hit an all-time daily high of 447 new machine learning papers, versus the usual 200/day before and after.
The volume is many times more than any human or reading group could digest in a year. The poster asks whether the system has passed the point of no return and whether it must "burn to the ground" before good science can resume.
