UK GDP beats forecasts at 0.4% in July, with programming and info services adding 0.12pp

UK GDP grew 0.4% in July, well above the Reuters poll consensus of no growth. The Office for National Statistics found that computer programming, consultancy and related activity grew 3.5%, contributing 0.12 percentage points to monthly real GDP.
The author urges careful reading of the evidence:
- Signal: ONS noted many businesses reporting the largest turnover increases in programming and information services were involved in AI and cloud computing.
- Attribution gap: ONS itself says its data cannot quantify the exact AI contribution, so the 0.12pp gain should not simply be relabeled "AI growth."
- Durability: monthly GDP is volatile and subject to revision; one strong month does not establish a productivity boom.
