Dev: 99% of 'open source model' users just want free, never contribute
aronchick · x · 2026-09-13
Pushing back on the current "satanic panic" about open source models being killed, developer aronchick argues: 1) almost none of the models in question are actually open source—some are open-weight, most are merely free; 2) 99.99% of these users don't care about openness at all, they just want free models—they file no issues, open no PRs, contribute nothing to the community, and donate nothing to maintainers. They just consume.
