No quality breakthroughs yet: aronchick pushes back on Terminator-style AI threat framing
aronchick · x · 2026-09-13
Developer aronchick argued that rival Chinese models have shown no single breakthrough on quality or evals to date — only exceptional architectures and great engineering, distilling and making models more efficient rather than breaking benchmarks. He insists he isn't underestimating them: they are rational actors who see the same risks. If they perceive reckless racing and no framework for transparency, they'll worry about the same unstable takeoff — and with an avenue to collaborate, they would take it. He called the "race insanely faster with no headlights or we're murdered" framing rash, while noting the picture could change.
