Andrew Critch: leading AI companies was the right bet on AI safety

AI safety researcher Andrew Critch argues Demis Hassabis, Sam Altman, Dario Amodei and Elon Musk understood early that businesses steer the world more than individuals, so leading the companies building AI was their best shot at positive outcomes — and they were right. He adds he only fully appreciated business leadership's role in AI safety around 2021, viewing agents, risks, preferences, companies and countries through nested, overlapping boundaries.
