Security researcher LaurieWired argues silent data corruptions (SDCs) will become a serious issue this decade due to higher density, lower-voltage gating, massive scale, and space deployment on non-rad-hard CPUs/GPUs. Hardware-level tolerance is prohibitively expensive and the SDC long tail too long; one bad tensor core can silently corrupt AI training clusters. She suggests CS students write theses on SDCs and low-overhead algorithmic fault tolerance, where a 3% perf loss is worth detecting a failing core.
