Japan's JST-MEXT to host AI for Science 2026 symposium featuring Google DeepMind

Japan's JST-CRDS and the Ministry of Education (MEXT) will co-host the "AI for Science 2026" public symposium in Tokyo on September 17, in hybrid format.
- The event builds on Japan's 7th Science, Technology and Innovation Basic Plan and MEXT's basic strategy for promoting AI for Science; JST-CRDS previously published an "AI for Science Trends 2026" report
- Heiga Zen, Principal Scientist and Tokyo site lead at Google DeepMind, will present GDM's efforts to accelerate scientific breakthroughs with AI
- Program covers AI-robot-driven science (Riken's Koichi Takahashi), AI plus quantum materials science (IBM's Seiji Takeda), medical/pharma foundation models (SB Intuitions), scholarly information infrastructure (NII), and constitutional perspectives on AI regulation (Keio's Tatsuhiko Yamamoto)
- A panel discussion on R&D in the AI era closes the day
