Eric Xing (Shanghai AI Lab) endorses Patrick Moorhead's article with a layered analogy: an API is a hotel room you pay to stay in; open weights is a house with no blueprints; true open source is buying the house with all blueprints, materials docs, construction details and legal papers — so you can fix and remodel it.
He argues fake openness is worse than none: it creates an illusion of ownership while enterprises and governments build on the open-weight "ladder" that could vanish if suppliers pull the plug. He predicts the Linux-style open model will ultimately prevail.
