Palantir slams the 'token industrial complex': 400T tokens/day ≠ value
Beth_Kindig · x · 2026-09-12
Palantir has taken direct shots at OpenAI and Anthropic's business models, calling the AI ecosystem a self-serving "token industrial complex": labs monetize increased usage while customers' costs rise with every token—a fundamental misalignment—whereas Palantir aims to maximize the economic value enterprises extract from usage.
I/O Fund's analysis supplies the numbers: tokens processed per day now exceed 400 trillion, up 185%+ since October 2025 and 4,250%+ versus October 2024. Surging demand isn't the same as value creation—an EY survey finds 82% of senior leaders at AI-investing organizations are concerned about token usage and cost. The central question: whether rising token consumption translates into equal economic returns, a debate now escalating between Palantir and the leading labs, with dramatically different profitability between the two models.
