Oncologist Vinay Prasad examines the twin narratives that AI has a '10%' chance of killing humanity or curing all disease. He argues 'we might kill you all' is an unusual but effective advertising pitch: the more the public believes AI could wipe out humanity, the more it believes AI can replace doctors, coders, and travel agents — and the narrative also serves to regulate competitors out of existence pre-launch.
He acknowledges that both doomers and optimists are largely sincere, but notes medicine's track record of failed prophecies: Francis Collins promised genomics-guided blood pressure pills by 2015, and CAR-T still has zero solid-tumor approvals in the US. He sees AI's realistic risks as hacking untouched systems, disrupting financial networks and power grids, and manipulating traffic lights — not sci-fi extinction.
