Replying to critics, Gary Marcus says the strategy is to use community pressure to stop AI labs from getting wealthier and more powerful, and hence less likely to cause catastrophic harm. He adds that he personally thinks literal x-risk is a red herring — targeting lab power concentration rather than doom narratives.
