Frontier AI Lab Staff Launch Coalition to Act on Safety Concerns Across Companies
pstAsiatech · x · 2026-09-11
A new group, the Coalition of Concerned AI Staff, has been launched by employees working at frontier AI labs who believe those closest to the technology bear responsibility to the public.
What the coalition does:
- Organizes collective action: cross-lab meetings and working groups on shared concerns, from pushing for stronger safeguards to holding companies to safety commitments.
- Brings in independent expertise: seminars since February on labor, surveillance, recent US legislation, the history of Pugwash, and AI safety in China, with topics suggested by staff.
- Connects staff with policymakers and civil society: arranging briefings where lab employees can offer technical input within their employers' policies.
Why now: labs are making decisions about military use, surveillance, and automating AI research; both OpenAI and Anthropic have reported models accessing external systems without authorization during testing. Frontline staff are often the first to spot problems, but raising concerns is hard when employers don't want to hear them. Google and OpenAI staff have already crossed company lines to back safeguards against mass surveillance and autonomous weapons.
