GLIE: Late-Interaction Embeddings Have Only ~5 Degrees of Freedom, Enabling Massive Storage Savings

A new preprint, GLIE (Generative Late-Interaction Embeddings for Visual Document Retrieval), shows how to shrink the storage cost of late-interaction retrieval for visual documents.
Key finding: late-interaction retrievers like ColBERT store 1,000 vectors per page, but those vectors have only 5 degrees of freedom—massive redundancy.
The approach: store only a handful of projected vectors as an index, regenerate the full embedding set for top candidates using a tiny shared decoder, then rerank. This preserves late-interaction accuracy while slashing storage.
