OpenAI CFO: Compute I bought a year ago could sell for 3-5x today — and we're still short

OpenAI CFO Sarah Friar revealed that compute purchased a year ago could be resold on the market today for 3 to 5x its cost — "a great investment, if nothing else" — but the bad news is OpenAI is still compute-constrained and she wishes she'd bought more.

The same thread quotes ex-Google engineer Tibo Sottiaux, who says he joined OpenAI after learning only 20 people were running ChatGPT: "an insanely small number... how do you maintain a product at that scale with that level of autonomy?" He joined right before the reasoning-model efforts began.
