Responding to an open letter circulating online, the Mathathon organizers published an official reply, calling it "a concrete first step":
- They are collaborating with the math community to redesign the event, moving away from the hackathon framing and adding a 6-month research period
- They still believe in the value of an event for exploration and collaboration with AI as a responsible aid, and welcome further feedback
Quoter AlvanArulandu adds that directed reading programs, NSF REUs and workshops must adapt to best support early-career researchers in light of AI, without shunning it.
