OpenAI beats NYU mathematician to Navier-Stokes proof, says it's made progress on a second Millennium Problem

The NY Times reports NYU mathematician Tristan Buckmaster and a collaborator had made major August progress on the Navier-Stokes equations — one of the $1M Millennium Prize Problems — before OpenAI, spurred by rumors Anthropic had solved one or two of the same list, announced the answer in under a week. Buckmaster described feeling run over by one of the world's most powerful companies, igniting a social-media firestorm over credit. OpenAI also says it has made substantial progress on a second, unnamed Millennium Problem (Hodge, Birch-Swinnerton-Dyer among candidates) and is deciding how to share the results.
