Yglesias: AI safetyists' investment advice is bullish — the opposite view is 'it's all a bubble'
gleech · x · 2026-09-10
Responding to Tyler Cowen's challenge for investable doomer predictions, Matthew Yglesias notes the irony: the best-performing advice he's gotten from safetyists was bullish (buy Nvidia, join Anthropic for stock comp, buy OTM index calls). Since the safetyist thesis is 'transformative acceleration + nonzero catastrophe risk,' the market-dominant term is the acceleration — making safetyists and super-optimists financially identical, with 'it's all a bubble' as the true opposite view. He also criticizes the lazy 'doomer' labeling and argues the economy could survive an AI downtick since AI resources wouldn't sit idle.
