UCL launches SOFAIR open-source AI lab as Britain's frontier lab answer emerges

Replying to the "UK has no frontier lab" thread: new labs are emerging, including Ineffable Labs, Recursive, Inherent Labs and UCL's SOFAIR Lab. SOFAIR will bring together researchers across CS, math, statistics and neuroscience to develop next-generation open-source AI architectures, including ones designed to run on widely available hardware. UK AI minister Kanishka Narayan framed it as key to UK AI leadership. The replier notes energy prices remain a hurdle and compute will likely be sourced from multiple geographies.
